How does DuraDerm® prevent infection?

DuraDerm® is a microbicidal liquid that forms a protective barrier when applied. The microbicidal agent in DuraDerm® has shown in laboratory testing to kill microbes (bacteria, fungi, and viruses) on contact, and then forms a flexible barrier that protects the wound from harmful elements, such as water, dirt, and germs.

How does DuraDerm® promote healing?

DuraDerm® helps prevent infection from occurring and promotes the overall healing process because of its unique and patented technology. The process, or “Mechanism of Action”, is as follows:

Carbon Dioxide Releases as Oxygen is trapped in the film barrier to promote healing

  • When DuraDerm® is applied to a clean, dry wound, the microbicidal agent kills bacteria, fungi, and viruses on contact.
  • As DuraDerm® dries, a microbicidal barrier is formed that blocks harmful elements from getting into the wound. This flexible, protective barrier also prevents oxygen entry into the wound.
  • As the microbicidal barrier forms, carbon dioxide infused into the liquid polymer during the manufacturing process is released. This lowers the pH and creates a healing environment.
  • The capillary system brings additional oxygen to the wound, which is captured under the DuraDerm®. This oxygen serves as the fuel for re-epithelialization, or wound healing.
DuraDerm® has FDA 510(k) clearance for the following
  • Use on clean, dry wounds
  • Creates a microbicidal barrier destructive to microbes, including bacteria, fungi and viruses
  • Forms a film covering to protect clean, dry wounds from water, dirt and germs to prevent infection. DuraDerm® is not intended as a treatment or cure for all types of wounds.
  • Creates a clear, elastomeric, non-odorous film to protect wounds during healing
  • Used on closed surgical incisions and excisions that are clean and dry
  • Used on minor wounds, minor burns, cuts, abrasions, and scrapes
  • Protects the skin from blisters, calluses and sores due to rubbing
  • Protects minor wounds from germs while providing flexibility
  • Protects difficult body regions where movement, such as flexing, bending and creasing skin may occur
